You will have to enchant your spells with the Extract Undead spell. You will find all Extract spells under Myth. If you hit the monsters, and you do collect animus, but lose the battle, you will lose the animus you have collected. You must WIN it in order to actually keep it.

Deckathalons restrict friends, potions, elixirs, henchmen, and stat boosts from Wizards' normal gear, Pets, and Spells; Wizards are only permitted to use Treasure Cards (Enchanted Treasure Cards, Polymorphs and Monstrology Treasure Cards excluded), their Decks, and whatever May Cast Spells their Pet and gear provide, along with preset stats.Every time we update Wizard101, we like to let our players know what changes have been made and what new additions have been given to the game. You get the most xp from fighting various creatures and the higher rank they are, the more xp you get. .
