While the HEI is a good design due to its simplicity and durability, it isn’t designed to meet the needs of the stock car racer. Even in a stock low-compression engine, a stock HEI cannot produce enough spark to reliably fire all eight cylinders after about 5,000 rpm. Increasing the compression makes the problem even worse.
